Bad Interview Answers 🔗

Learning Objectives

Preparation

Grab a list of common interview questions from somewhere like Coursera.

Please set a timer for 15 minutes.

Introduction

We have a lot of serious work to do, but let’s start with some fun

Let's energise

🎯 Goal: Let’s wake up and have a laugh (15 minutes)

1. Interviewer: Cold call a random person and ask them an interview question. Choose an ordinary question.

2. Interviewee: You must give a terrible answer to this question (keep it clean, please!). Then cold call another person to be the interviewer.

3. Interviewer: Give absolutely straight-faced feedback. If you laugh, you’re out and must nominate another player to complete your feedback and return the game to step 1.

Let's get jobs 🔗

Learning Objectives

Introduction

This is a list of content to guide the employability sessions.

List of employability sessions

🎯 Goal: Feel ready and confident to get a job in tech (56 minutes)

The following themes are the ones that should be discussed. They are guidelines in a suggested order, but you can choose the one you want to discuss each week.

Ideally, these should be worked on in smaller groups with a broader group reflection.

1. Profiles

  • Can you identify the different aspects of your profile?
  • Compare their profiles against the portfolio module criteria

2. Understanding Job Descriptions

  • Find and share jobs and then collectively review them for suitability
  • Identify the aspects that make a suitable job description and compare jobs they find against those criteria

3. Collective Job Hunting

  • What are the benefits of collective job hunting?
  • How can we make this work best?
  • How will you support this?

4. Networking

  • Share which networking event you went to last week
  • How do you think it will help your job search?
  • What would you do differently for the next event?

5. Interviews

  • Practice mock interviews with different people, with two behavioural and two technical questions.
  • Thinking about “Would I hire this person I just interviewed/?” give each other honest feedback on if you would/wouldn’t hire them and why.

6. Creating sessions together

  • Collectively identify and request support on employability/PD areas they need help on

Morning Break

A quick break of fifteen minutes so we can all concentrate on the next piece of work.

Demo your product 🔗

Learning Objectives

Preparation

Deploy your product and make it available. It isn’t expected to be completely finished to be shared in this session.

Introduction

You have thirty minutes to run Demo Time. Each team will talk for five minutes and answer questions for three minutes.

If you have more than three teams participating in Demo Time, breakout and demo in groups of no more than three teams.

Showtime

🎯 Goal: Demo a feature (30 minutes)

One person should be responsible for timekeeping. Set a timer. Each team will talk for five minutes and answer questions for three minutes.

Each team will demo a ticket delivered in the previous week.

Think about:

  • Giving context
  • Explaining the user story and what you are trying to achieve with it
  • Showing your implementation
  • Sharing blockers and failures
  • Asking for questions/feedback
  • Saying something interesting

🎤 Guest Speaker

Learning Objectives

If a guest speaker is available, they will join us for this session. We will ask them questions about their career and their work, and they will give us advice about their specialism.

This is a placeholder block.

Community Lunch

Every Saturday at CYF we cook and eat together. We share our food and our stories. We learn about each other and the world. We build community.

This is everyone’s responsibility, so help with what is needed to make this happen, for example, organising the food, setting up the table, washing up, tidying up, etc. You can do something different every week. You don’t need to be constantly responsible for the same task.

Retro: Start / Stop / Continue

Retro (20 minutes)

A retro is a chance to reflect on this past sprint. You can do this on a Jamboard (make sure someone clicks “Make a copy” before you start, and you work on that together) or on sticky notes on a wall.

  1. Set a timer for 5 minutes.
  2. Write down as many things as you can think of that you’d like to start, stop, and continue doing next sprint.
  3. Write one point per note and keep it short.
  4. When the timer goes off, one person should set a timer for 1 minute and group the notes into themes.
  5. Next, set a timer for 2 minutes and all vote on the most important themes by adding a dot or a +1 to the note.
  6. Finally, set a timer for 8 minutes and all discuss the top three themes.
